She Culls Seagulls
2025 / Super 8
-
A meditation on coastal erosion; shot on expired Super 8 and utilising several experimental analogue processes, this short showcases a much-maligned bird whose numbers are in decline, in deprived coastal towns, on film long past its use-by date.
-
Studying at BAL Film School 2024 exposed me to various alternative analogue film processes which I was keen to continue practicing at home. Without the resources of a dedicated lab, I developed a small-footprint method of processing colour film in my 1.4m² home bathroom, using a 2-bath C41 process at room temperature. This led to further experiments, including a black and white reversal process using only food-grade ingredients, cross-processing several expired film stocks, and recreating Edward Raymond Turner’s method for a 3-colour additive process using black and white film and coloured filters.
-
The results of this research are presented as a single-channel experimental short, an expanded cinema performance, and in an article disseminating my experiments processing various expired film stocks.
